Details: Join us for D.C.’s signature Women in Horror Month event!

Starting at 6:30 pm we will feature readings and artist discussions from the 2017 D.C. Women in Horror in Anthology.

At 7 p.m. we will begin our screening of The Good Sisters.

Breanne Good and Kindra Good are sisters with a secret life — practitioners of witchcraft, glamours, and black magick. Fiercely protective of their privacy, craft, and ancient bloodline, they become suspicious of their new neighbor Daniel who also leads a life shrouded in mystery. Unsure if he is unnaturally obsessed with them – or if they are only being paranoid — the Good Sisters will have to draw all their power about them as it becomes clear their ages-old battle of good versus evil, light versus dark, freedom versus oppression may be about to begin again. Which leaves the question … who is being Good, and who is not?

The Good Sisters is an independent film shot in Havre de Grace Maryland, the hometown of its creators Jimmyo and April Monique Burrill (who plays Kindra Good). It premiered in 2009 at the hisotric Senator Theater in Baltimore, Maryland where all of John Waters films are premiered.

This screening is part of the 8th Annual Women in Horror Month. Women in Horror Month (WiHM) is an international, grassroots initiative, which encourages supporters to learn about and showcase the underrepresented work of women in the horror industries. Whether they are on the screen, behind the scenes, or contributing in their other various artistic ways, it is clear that women love, appreciate, and contribute to the horror genre. This February, MUFF celebrates Women In Horror Month once again with a trip back to highschool: the classes, the crushes, the cheerleading, the…. vampires? That’s right—BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.

Before Sarah Michelle Gellar brought Buffy to life on the small screen, Kristy Swanson was kicking butt on the big screen—directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui—in this 1992 classic. Oh, and BUFFY was Hilary Swank’s first film, too!

So, make sure your chicken is funky, your goose is loose, and your stake is pointy, because you’re in for one hell of a ride! Join us in the lobby starting at 8:00 PM for photobooth fun, a vampy playlist, and a vendor pop-up of Toronto women artisans ready to show you what they’ve got! As always, we will have some amazing prizes to give away before the screening, so don’t be late!

Our Mini MUFF selection this month, OLIVIA, comes from local filmmaker and animator Laura Vegys. Laura will be in attendance to introduce this WORLD PREMIERE screening!

Our pop up shop will feature:

Kim with Cursed4Life

Marla with Gloom Matter

Sara with Sara’s Soaps & Candles

Elize with Elize Frances Art

Richelle & Emily with ‘Slices’ Zine

A big thank you to our MUFF Friends & sponsors of this event: Carlton Cinema, The Beguiling, The Candy Bar, Condom Shack, TOA Print & Promote, Heart On, Cursed4Life, Gloom Matter, Sara’s Soaps And Candles, and Brooch Boyfriends. Check back closer to the event for more sponsor announcements.

Our awesome venue and home base, The Carlton, has a fully accessible entrance, snack area (very important), theaters, and toilets. If you have any additional accessibility concerns, please reach out to us in advance of a screening. MUFF is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for all of our patrons and will do our best to accommodate. You can read more about Imagine Cinema’s Accessibility Plan here: https://imaginecinemas.com/accessibility-plan/.

The MUFF Society is a feminist film series that is based in Toronto, but has seen monthly screenings in New York City and San Francisco as well. We aim to champion women in film both on and off screen by programming films that have awesome female characters and/or have powerhouse female players behind the scenes: female directors, female writers, female editors, etc. We are also an online community which aims to keep conversations about women in film flowing and which supports and promotes other film events and initiatives which are focused on women in film.
