Is your busy life of murders and executions getting you down? Are the cran-apple stains you can’t get out of your sheets driving you crazy? Do you think everyone is wrong about Huey Lewis and the News’ early work being their best (clearly, it was a little too new wave and they really came into their own, commercially and artistically, when Sports came out in ’83)?

Then come join The MUFF Society for a night of film, fun, and utterly insane prizes at Carlton Cinema! (Sorry, they don’t have a good bathroom to do coke in.)

american-psycho-mary-harronFebruary is Women in Horror Month and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to show Mary Harron’s classic homegrown (shot in Toronto!) horror,  American Psycho.

American Psycho introduces us to Patrick Bateman, a slick-haired finance bro who has the same problems as any yuppie of the ‘80s: his business cards have not yet reached perfection, he can’t get a reservation at the “it” restaurant Dorsia, and he has a seemingly endless amount of video tapes to return. He’s also likes to dissect girls.

Bateman and his merry band of coke-snorters have their origins in Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name, but are brought to life by the direction of Mary Harron. Harron co-wrote the American Psycho screenplay with actress Guinevere Turner and together they amplified the intelligent satire, biting humour, and aestheticized gore, making it perfect for the big screen.

Join us in the lobby at 8:00 PM and don’t forget to apply your herb-mint facial mask so that you are fresh and ready for our photobooth fun! Try one of our to-die-for themed MUFFtails, shake your booty like Christian Bale in a raincoat to our latest #MUFFMix playlist, and donate a dollar to get a limited-edition American Psycho button!

Our Mini MUFF selection this month will be Long Branch, co-directed and co-written by local filmmakers Linsey Stewart and Dane Clark. Lead actress Jenny Raven will be in attendance.

A big thank you to our MUFF Friends & sponsors of this event: Carlton Cinema, Cinefilles, The Beguiling, The Candy Bar, Coal Miner’s Daughter, Queen Video, and BATL – Backyard Axe Throwing League. Check our Facebook event closer to the date for more sponsor announcements.

Description: February is the international recognition month for Women in Horror.

We are hoping to share with you a fundraising event that’s happening right here in Melbourne on Saturday February 21st.From humble beginnings as a 3CR community radio special, evolving into a successful mini festival in February 2014. Women in Horror Melbourne is celebrating its fourth year at Northcote’s artistic hub 303.Women in Horror Recognition Month (WiHM) assists female genre artists in gaining opportunities, exposure, and education through altruistic events. The vision is a world wherein all individuals are equally given the opportunity to create, share, and exploit their concept of life, pain, and freedom of expression.

Statistics show that women are still not offered the same opportunities as men due to a variety of reasons from discrimination to female professionals accepting less than they are worth in order to receive the same opportunities as their male colleagues.
According to the mainstream and past feminist studies – horror has earned the distinction of one of the most objectifying genres. Utilising the genre in art to explore the female perspective, vocalizing their own concerns within the genre via websites, blogs and the sharing of female generated content – it’s creating a domino effect.

WiHM exists to assist the much bigger movement of equal rights. Men play a vital part in the female gender reaching equality. There are many male WiHM supporters and artists who choose to assist and work with professional and talented underrepresented females. Participating in positive, constructive environments that encourage and provide a safe platform for women to share and explore is vital.

Due to the success and positive outreach from the local genre community in previous years, we would love you to help us make WiHM 2015 our biggest year yet. Please join us in an effort to raise awareness of the need for gender equality in the arts sector.

Women in Horror Month is all about expanding opportunities for contemporary female genre filmmakers and artists by raising awareness about the changing roles for women in the film industry.

Come celebrate with us!
